"the sudden realisation that each of us, no matter which area we were coming from, were all heading in the same philosophical direction: that developers now see the internet as a platform to run applications on, rather than something to connect to."
- Ben Hammersley, reporting for The Guardian, from the O'Reilly Emerging Technologies Conference, Santa Clara, May 2002
What We Do
We build websites in the traditional sense of the term, and we also build websites that run computer programs. We refer to these, loosely, as web applications.
These programs might be extremely complex or they might be quite simple, and they need not necessarily be obvious. For example, a number of our sites provide forms for visitors to fill in and submit. What happens to these forms after submission? The answer is that this very much depends on the particular needs of the site in question. In one case the information might be stored in a database. In another an email might be automatically generated and sent to a sales manager with the information submitted by the user. A further email might be sent to the user thanking him or her for their enquiry. However, in each of these cases programs written in a language called ASP will run on the server to perform the required tasks.
This is of course a very simple case. At the other extreme, we have built complex content management systems which allow a web site owner to update regularly changing information. But, whatever it is we are are doing, we do "see the internet as a platform to run applications on, rather than something to connect to".
